The natural boundaries of Sikkim are
formed by the mountain chains running southwards from the main Himalayan range.
The Chola range divides it from Tibet and Bhutan and the Singalila range
separates it from Nepal with the Greater Himalayan range forming the barrier
between Sikkim and Tibet in the North. The landscape of Sikkim is dominated by
Mt. Khangchendzonga.
Mt. Khangchendzonga is the third highest mountain
in the world and the highest in India. Its height is 27,803 ft and is towards west of Sikkim. It
is the crowning glory of Sikkim with magnificent snow and ice scenery is not
just a mountain for local people. It is the abode of the guardian deity of the
Sikkimese, Dzo-nga, and is highly revered among them. The mountain is so
sacrosanct is that mountaineering expeditions, reaching within a few meters of
peak, have never touched the summit in deference to local beliefs. This sacred
mountain is visible from every place of Sikkim.
Mt. Kabru also towards West of Sikkim is 24,005 ft. high. Located in the Himalayas, it is the
part of the border of India and Nepal. There is a 6400 m saddle and a 6682 m
summit known as Rathong to the south west of Kabru. The Kabru Dome (6600 m) is
located towards its south east.
Mt. Siniolchu, 22,610 ft, is one of the tallest mountains in Sikkim. This one of the
most majestic and beautiful peaks of the world stands near the Green Lake area,
in West Sikkim.
